How Long Can A Cichlid Live?

Introduction

Just how long is the life span of a Cichlid.  The answer from the internet ranges from a few months to in excess of 15 years depending on the size of the cichlid. Seems like the life span is proportional to the size.

There are reports of Oscars and Green Terrors and Jack Dempesy that live for more than 10 years under proper care.

Vieja Argentea (Silver Cichlid)

I have a Silver Cichlid (Vieja Argentea) for about 6+ years.  Bought it at a local fish farm in Feb 2003 when he was about 2-3 inches and is now about 9-10 inches.

Main diet consists of  pellets with occasionally vegetables and tubifex worms.

It was kept in a grown-up tank and transferred to a 4 ft tank for a couple of years. It is now housed in a 110 litres tank. 50% weekly water changes are carried out religiously.

Through the years, the black spots has sort of enlarged and the fish appears to be more “black” than “silver”.  Playfulness has also decreased as it use to move the gravels and PVC pipes around the tank to merely staying at a corner and only occasionally flared its gills when agitated.

As in many Central American Cichlids, it has Hole in Head Disease (HIDD) but this does not seems to have any adverse effects.
