COMMON MEASUREMENTS FOR FISH

There are some common measurements that hobbyists use for measurements of fish.  This is useful for reference for example during buying and selling of fish. What does fish size means? To one, it could be the whole length of the fish while others may be referring to only the body of the fish. 

In most cases between hobbyists, the length of the fish is taken as the standard length instead of length of whole fish. The main measurements use are :

1.   Total Length.   This is the intuitive notion of the length of the fish.  It is measured from the nose to the end of the fish tail. It may not reflect the true size of fish as some fish have long tails or nose barbs.

2.  Standard Length.   This is generally the size that most hobbyist refers to when they say their fish is about 6 inches.  It is measured from the nose to the end of the body, excluding the tail.

3.  Body Depth.    To a lesser degree, this is seldom use unless for fish with broad body such as Central American Cichlids or Angelfish. This is the whole depth of the fish (in most cases is the body depth). 

4.  Head Depth.   This is the head width or depth.
