Profile and Description of Central America Cichlids

Vieja Bifasciatum (Red Head Monk)

Temperature : 230 to 28 0 C.

PH : 7.2  to 7.6

Hardness : Neutral to slightly hard.

Breeding : Open spawner. Both fish clean a spot and female start to lay eggs with the male following behind fertilising the eggs. Up to hundreds of eggs can be laid.

Sexual Difference :  Males are normally bigger with more and longer fins. Females have dark bottom during spawning.

Description:

This is beautiful but aggressive fish especially during spawning. The colour is at its best during spawning. The head of both male and female can get extremely red during mating with the body at times tint with blue hues.

To get a pair, it is generally easier to get a group of young fish and raised them to maturity. They should be allowed to pair off and it is adviseable to remove the rest of the fish.

One of my favorite CA cichlids. It needs a large tank, in excess of 5ft to fully allow them to grow to their maximum size
